Private Hire Cars and Taxis

Both private hire cars and taxis are in the business of transporting people from one destination to another but there are important differences to consider when making a comparison between the 2 services.
Most of us are familiar with black cabs, that operate in various areas of the country (also known as Hackney carriages), but what is not quite so obvious is the fact that only black cabs (taxis) can pull over on the side of the road to accept a paying fare. The drivers of black cabs are mostly self employed and need to undergo various tests & exams before they are successfully granted a licence.

Drivers operating as a private hire car and not as a black cab, are only able to pick up fares when pre-ordered.  When we go out for an evening we may need to look up a `taxi` number in a directory, or on the internet. We will then ring up to order our lift -  but strictly speaking, these vehicles are not classed as taxis and are referred to as private hire vehicles. They will operate via a radio system and will be informed where their next `pick up` is. If a private hire driver were to go out touting for business around the streets, looking for anyone who may need a ride, they could face a stiff fine and possible withdrawal of their licence.
If you were to choose a career as a driver then both types of car hire give you the freedom to operate on a self employed basis - or work for an established company. Choosing which one is the most suitable will depend on how self motivated you are and whether you wish to accept most of the responsibility yourself or just return home after your shift finishes.  Some drivers form co-operatives and spread the responsibility and costs between themselves. They soon gain experience and route knowledge to cover all of their surrounding areas.

One way of diversifying for licensed black cab drivers is to offer services in the private hire sector. Whilst it is lawful to carry out these services for black cabs (taxis), it will not be legal to do this the other way around. No private hire car can operate like a taxi. Obtaining taxi insurance is a legality that applies to both trades, especially when it involves driving for a living and dealing with the safety of the public. Specialist insurers will be able help with the correct policy for private hire cars and taxis.

  1. If you were to select a profession as a car owner then both kinds of car rental provide you with the independence to work on a self used time frame or work for an founded organization.
