What Does The Job of a Mechanic Entail?

-->

When considering to enter the motor trade industry, you may be wondering which sector of the industry to join. Maybe you want to try the workshop side where you can work with your hands or perhaps you prefer the dealership side where you can sell people their new cars. As a mechanic you will need to have good problem solving skills and enjoy working with your hands, otherwise this job is definitely not for you.

Repairs

In a workshop environment whether you work for a large car dealership or an independent company, you will need to do vehicle repairs. Cars or vans will come in on a regular basis, maybe they are even delivered by a tow truck because they have a serious mechanical problem, it is up to you to find the problem and fix it.

This is where the problem solving skills come in, you will need to have a good understanding of engines and how they work. Knowing your business can ensure that repairs are carried out quickly and effectively, enabling the customer driving away with their vehicle as good as new.

Services

Another aspect you will deal with on a daily basis is servicing. Vehicles of all kinds need to be serviced on a regular basis, this may be a minor service where you drain the oil and replace with clean. Each service must be done in a short period of time following the required guidelines to ensure optimum performance from the vehicle.

Checks

As winter takes hold of the UK more people are taking their vehicles into workshops to have them checked over for the winter months to make sure they are safe. Customers don't want to end up stuck on the side of the motorway in icy conditions. Quality checks are common in the workshop environment, it may mean test driving the vehicle, testing the tyres and checking the oil and water to see if the car can be given the all clear.

Many workshops also run a MOT test centre and you may get involved in that. What this entails is to ensure that the vehicle is safe to be driven on the UK roads. There are guidelines to work by and your job will be to check to see the car meets these requirements, if not work will need to be carried out by a mechanic to make the car safe and give it the all clear for another year.

How Much Money is There in Being a Motor Trader?

English: Car Dealership, Conwy Ffordd Maelgwyn...
-->
Being a motor trader can bring in fantastic financial rewards depending on what sector of the industry you choose and how you manage your business.

As with any business, management is key. If you work hard to market yourself, increase your profits and decrease your expenses you are on the road to success. When looking at the difference between car dealerships and mechanical workshops, it's easy to see that a mechanical workshop could be the financially viable option.

People need their vehicles repaired, they need them serviced and as a legal requirement, they need to have their MOT test carried out annually. This means that mechanical workshops will have a constant flow of clientèle from repeat and referral customers to new customers.

On the other hand car dealerships that sell used cars may be financially better off than those that sell new cars. Cheaper vehicle sales may be a more viable option over the newer and expensive vehicles.

New and expensive vehicles requires most purchasers to obtain finance. These days financial institutions have become very strict in handing out credit. In fact obtaining credit can be almost impossible for many as the lending rules have chances with the financial crisis we have just experienced. So even though dealerships that sell these vehicles probably make more profit per vehicle sold, they don't sell as many vehicles as a car dealership that sells affordable second hand vehicles that a purchaser can pay for in cash.

Most people who join this industry do it because they love the industry. You find the majority of mechanics have been tinkering with vehicles since they were young, huddled up in the garage with Dad on a weekend repairing a vehicle or fixing the farm equipment when they lived in a village. Mechanics is something that has grown on them and pushed them towards this career.

As a mechanic in a company you can earn a decent salary, most workshops will offer above average salaries to those employers who are in demand. Maybe you specialise in certain vehicles or have knowledge about vehicles that none of the other employees have. This puts you in demand and takes the strain off the owner and in turn, can lead to a higher pay cheque at the end of each month.

If you really want to know how much money you can make as a motor trader then you have to think about how you manage your business and the demand for your services. These two combined can offer fantastic financial rewards in the long run.

Considering a Motor Trade Job and Need Fleet Insurance?

Any business where you are responsible for a few vehicles should consider fleet insurance. This cover is available to any business where you have more than three or five vehicles, depending on the company you choose to sign with.

If you are thinking of joining the motor trade and are going to need a few vehicles to ensure the smooth running of your business, this type of policy is a practical and affordable option.

With this type of protection you are able to place all your vehicles under one policy. What this means for you is that when it comes time to claim you are not digging through paperwork trying to remember which vehicles is covered by which company. It can save you a lot of time and energy and also enables you to enjoy a fast and convenient claims process as you have one number to call and one process to complete.

Another big advantage with this type of cover is there is only one premium to pay. This means that you don't forget premiums and let your policy lapse and you don't have a choice of premiums being due throughout the year. You have one premium which makes it easier to budget for, especially when you are first entering the motor trade.

These policies are very flexible enabling you add and remove vehicles as you buy or sell them, you will never end up paying for a vehicle you don't own any more. The premiums are affordable as you are placing all your eggs in one basket, so to speak. If you were paying premiums with a host of companies, you would pay considerably more per vehicle than placing them all under one easy to manage policy.

The biggest advantage of them all is that you can place your own personal vehicle onto the policy if you use it to get to and from work, this will help you reduce your overall costs in the long run and ensure that all the vehicles owned by you are safe and secure when driving on our UK roads.

Fleet insurance is not only a convenience, it's a way to save money. Putting all your vehicles whether they are cars, vans or motorcycles or a mix of all three into one policy can save you money and time, giving you the time to concentrate on your growing motor trade business.

Where to Find the Best Deals for Motor Traders

When running a business you are always on the lookout for the best deals, whether it's a cheaper insurance quote or affordable parts, where you can save money and remain competitive. Good deals are imperative for motor traders who want to offer the best in service and be competitive when it comes to pricing.

Speaking to your suppliers can be one way to achieve the best possible deals. Chances are that you currently buy from a choice of suppliers, this means that you are not getting a good discount. You may be offered a discount by these suppliers, but if you negotiate with them that you will only buy your parts from them, you are looking at a sizeable discount, which can make a huge impact on the amount you save and how competitive you can be for your clients.

Finding the best deals is easier than you may think, speak to your fellow businesses in your industry around the area, find out who they use for their insurance, their utilities and even their parts, you may find that phoning around these companies or contacting them online can offer you a great deal which will help you business move forward.

You can also take the time to look online for items such as utilities and insurance, these you can often find cheaper online deals which can help you reduce your overall budget. Then there is your bank, you may have been with your financial institution since opening, but are they offering you the best deal? Are you paying high rates when depositing cash and does your bank have your business interests at heart?

Looking at all aspects of your business, you can take down notes of what you are paying on a monthly basis, what have you included in your budget? Do you need to reduce your insurance? Are you paying a very high energy bill? Does your competitors get their parts cheaper than you do? What about advertising, is there a way to reduce this cost?

Once you have everything into account you can start hunting for the best deals, the advantage is that a majority of this can be done online after hours in the comfort of your own home, you can request quotes and compare them to find the best possible deal for your business.

Take the time during the day to meet with suppliers, ask them what discount they will offer and what is their best deal to you if you were only to use them, guaranteeing them all of your business. Motor traders have a choice of options to find the best deals, speaking to fellow business owners, the internet and your suppliers will all steer you in the right direction.
